Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and opposition leader Raja Riaz have agreed to name Senator Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar as caretaker premier to oversee elections, the prime minister's office said.

"The prime minister (Sharif) and leader of opposition have jointly signed the advice which will be sent to the president for approval," the statement on Saturday said.

Pakistan's Geo News said President Arif Alvi approved Kakar's appointment.

A lesser known politician from the southwestern province of Balochistan, Kakar will name a cabinet and head a government to steer the nuclear-armed nation through an economic and political crisis until a new government is elected.

"We first agreed that whoever should be prime minister, he should be from a smaller province so smaller provinces' grievances should be addressed," said Raja Riaz after meeting with outgoing premier Shehbaz Sharif.

Under Pakistan's constitution, a neutral caretaker government oversees national elections, which must be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the parliament's lower house - which in this instance means early November.

The choice of caretaker prime minister has assumed heightened importance this time because the candidate will have extra powers to make policy decisions on economic matters, and amid fears the elections may be delayed by as much as six months.

The Election Commission has to draw new boundaries for hundreds of federal and provincial constituencies and, based on that, it will give an election date.

The Ministry of External Affairs of India has denied providing special security during the upcoming World Cup 2023, scheduled to take place in India.

In response to the request from Pakistan to make strict security arrangements, the ministry stated that the Men in Green are as important to them as other participants.

An official spokesperson from the Ministry of External Affairs has stated that the state will provide proper security to the arch-rivals whenever and wherever it is required.

Earlier this week, the government of Pakistan decided to send the Men in Green to India to participate in the upcoming marquee event in October-November.

An official mentioned that Pakistan believes that the state of bilateral relations with India should not hinder the fulfillment of its international sports-related obligations.

Last month, Shehbaz Sharif had formed a committee to thoroughly assess matters, including security situations, and deliberate on the participation of the team in the World Cup.

The 14-member committee, led by former Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, submitted a report to the Prime Minister last week after their meeting in Lahore.

It is pertinent to mention here that the arch-rivals will come face-to-face on October 14 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

In pursuit of a mineral-driven economy, the Government of Pakistan (GoP) has entered into a collaborative agreement with Wisconsin-based Miracle Saltworks Collective Inc (MSCI) through the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC). The partnership has been formalized with a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the entities.

Operating under the Ministry of Energy’s Petroleum Division, PMDC, and MSCI are embarking on a venture aimed at transforming Pakistan’s mineral sector. The non-binding MoU outlines the creation of a facility dedicated to the crushing and packaging of Himalayan pink rock salt. Conceptualized under the theme “Pink Prosperity,” the facility will cater to the export market.

The MoU signing took place on August 11, 2023, in the presence of Engr. Asad Ahmad, Managing Director of PMDC, and Ahmad Nadeem Khan, CEO of MSCI. The event was attended by Muhammad Hassan Iqbal, Additional Secretary of the Petroleum Division.

This signifies a noteworthy stride in bilateral cooperation and economic development between the two countries. With an anticipated investment of $200 million from MSCI, the initiative holds the potential to not only reshape Pakistan’s mineral industry but also enhance its standing in the global market. This partnership highlights the significance of international cooperation in fostering innovation and economic growth.

Pakistan has huge reserves of Himalayan pink salt with potential earnings of up to $12 billion. They are not only important for their aesthetic value but also for their diverse applications. Renowned for their unique mineral composition, these salt deposits are a source of culinary delight and offer prospects in wellness, decorative products, and therapeutic industries.
