While representing Johannesburg Buffaloes, the former all-rounder took six wickets in his two-over spell against Bulawayo Braves to lead his side to a 10 runs win.

Hafeez took an unheard-of triple wicket maiden in his first over, and then three more wickets in his second over, marking the first-ever five-wicket haul in T10 cricket.

It is worth noting that the inaugural edition of the Zim Afro T10 league kicked off yesterday with four matches being played at Harare Sports Club Ground.

Yesterday, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Management Committee appointed Mohammad Hafeez, as the Chief Selector of the national team ahead of crucial season.

According to media reports, the former captain is most likely to take charge as Chief Selector after the ongoing two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Zaka Ashraf had offered Mohammad Hafeez the opportunity to assume the role of chief selector for the national team. In an awareness seminar organized by Dr. Ziauddin Hospital to mark World Hepatitis Day, Dr. Zulfiqar Dharejo, the additional director of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Hepatitis Control Programme in Sindh, emphasized the importance of seeking treatment for diseases before they pose a threat to public health. The event aimed to shed light on the global impact of hepatitis and underscored the significance of early detection and preventive measures.

During the seminar, Dr. Dharejo highlighted the proactive efforts of the Sindh government in providing free vaccines and treatments for hepatitis.

Prof. Dr. Abbas Zafar, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ziauddin University, stressed that early diagnosis holds the key to effective treatments, urging all individuals to get tested.

The head of Ziauddin University’s Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Prof. Zaigham Abbas, offered valuable insights into the transmission of hepatitis B and C.

He identified critical sources of spread, including the transfusion of infected blood, reuse of unsterilized syringes or surgical equipment, lack of proper sterilization facilities, and the prevalence of quackery.

Dr. Khurram Baqai, Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology at Ziauddin University, highlighted Pakistan’s heavy burden of hepatitis C with over 10 million cases and 5 million hepatitis B carriers.

He presented a compelling statistic: By 2030, low- and middle-income countries have the potential to prevent an estimated 4.5 million premature deaths through focused efforts on vaccination, diagnostic tests, medicines, and comprehensive education campaigns.

Emphasizing preventive strategies for hepatitis A and E, Dr. Fatima Jehangir, Chair of Ziauddin University’s Department of Family Medicine, stressed the significance of regular handwashing with soap and the consumption of clean water and food. These simple steps can curb the transmission of these types of hepatitis.

Overall, the seminar served as a platform for healthcare professionals and experts to raise awareness about the severity of hepatitis infections, advocate for early detection, and encourage the implementation of preventive measures.

Loan apps in Pakistan have been in hot waters recently with the likes of FIA initiating large-scale crackdowns, resulting in many office shutdowns and app removals from the Google Play Store.

Speaking of Google, the search engine giant has also launched stricter policies against these apps in collaboration with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

If you have been keeping up with these apps, you would know that the suspicion is not uncalled for. They do collect a dubious amount of data after all. Here are the details.

Too Many Permissions

Popular loan apps, even the ones registered with the SECP, need a suspicious amount of permissions, even for simple tasks. Barwaqt, for instance, needs to see all your phone gallery, your contacts, your app activity, and all your personal info.

The screenshot below has been taken from Barwaqt’s Google Play Store page.

While other popular apps such as JazzCash and Easypaisa don’t list their lineup of necessary permissions on the app store, you can see the full list once you download their apps on your phone. Take a look.

As you can see, these apps require a whole lot of data from you too. Granted, you can always choose to disallow any of this data collection on modern versions of Android, but their existence in the first place is highly questionable. Keep in mind that these apps have more than 70 million downloads on Android combined.

Other SECP-registered apps including EasyLoan and Muawin are also guilty of the same practices. These apps have over a million downloads altogether.

Not Surprising

None of this comes as a surprise if you have been following the story. These apps have gotten into trouble in the past as well for all this data collection. Whether all this data is used for their own good or sold to third parties is a question we can only speculate about.

On the bright side, SECP did announce that it has issued a warning to its registered apps including Barwaqt to fix their predatory practices or face closure within a week.
