HVDC link improves the security and quality of power in the region, advancing the integration of emission-free energy

Zurich, Switzerland, June 15, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Hitachi Energy, a global technology leader that is advancing a sustainable energy future for all, today announced it won an order from Electricity Interconnection France-Spain (Inelfe), the joint venture bringing together operators of the Spanish (Red Eléctrica) and French (RTE) electricity transmission networks, in charge of the construction and commissioning of all cross-border connections between both countries, to supply four high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter stations to interconnect France and Spain via a subsea cable across the Biscay Gulf.

The Biscay Gulf interconnection, labeled as project of common interest (PCI) at the European level, will consist of two HVDC links, with a converter station at each end of both systems. Combined, the links will efficiently supply a total of 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity at 400 kilovolts (kV) over 400 kilometers (km). Providing the equivalent of the power consumption of more than two million households1, the links will improve the safety, stability, and quality of the electricity supply between the two countries. It will advance the integration of emission-free electricity and create a more efficient system to generate savings that benefit consumers and the rest of Europe.2 Most of the link will be underwater, but a short section of the link cable route will return to land to avoid the deep Capbreton Canyon.

“Cross border, and often subsea, interconnections are vital to Europe’s increasingly interconnected grid,” said Niklas Persson, Managing Director at Hitachi Energy’s Grid Integration business. “Through our pioneering HVDC technology, we enable Inelfe to accelerate the two countries’ sustainability goals, improving the safety, stability, and quality of electricity supply between France and Spain and the rest of Europe.”

Inelfe (Interconexión Eléctrica Francia-España or Electricity Interconnection France-Spain) was set up following the 2008 Zaragoza Agreement, between the governments of Spain and France, with the mission to enhance the exchange of electricity between the two countries. The resulting infrastructure doubled the interconnection capacity between France and Spain from 1,400 MW to 2,800 MW today. With the Biscay Gulf interconnection, the capacity to exchange power will soon reach 5,000 MW.3

In line with its Purpose to champion the urgency of a clean energy transition through innovation and collaboration, Hitachi Energy is collaborating with VINCI, an industry leader in energy and construction. Together the two companies will provide an advanced solution for the Biscay Gulf project by delivering the engineering and power technologies and the construction of the converter stations. The collaboration with VINCI will leverage the core competencies of the two companies to deliver a best-in-class solution for the project.

The Privatization Commission (PC) Board on Thursday approved Rs. 1,248.8 million budget of the PC for the fiscal year 2023-24 (FY24).

According to a press statement, the Privatization Commission (PC) convened its latest Board meeting under the Chairmanship of Abid Hussain Bhayo. The meeting, attended by the Federal Secretary, Board members, and senior officials of the Ministry/Commission, covered several topics requiring the PC Board’s attention.

One significant agenda item entailed the presentation and subsequent approval of the Audited Accounts for the fiscal year 2013-2014. The Board expressed appreciation for the extensive deliberations carried out by the Audit Committee and PC management in finalizing the audited accounts.

The Board emphasized the importance of promptly completing the audited reports for the remaining years on priority. In addition, the Board granted approval for the budget estimates of the PC for FY24, amounting to Rs. 1248.8 million.

These estimates, categorized under various heads of expenditure, will undergo further approval by the federal government as required by PC Ordinance, 2002. Recognizing the necessity of financial sustainability in PC operations, the Board was pleased to constitute the “PC Board Investment Committee.”

This committee will oversee the investment of available funds in accordance with the parameters provided in the PC Ordinance, 2000, and the instructions of the federal government.

The meeting also included a comprehensive presentation on the current status of the privatization process for Pakistan Engineering Company Ltd (PECO). It was acknowledged that significant inherent issues have led to a temporary suspension of the transaction, with no imminent resolution in sight.

Consequently, the Board concluded that it is imperative to propose to the government that the administrative ministry take immediate actions on a priority basis to address these issues before proceeding with the privatization of PECO.

Moreover, the Board provided its approval for the recommendations put forth by the Transaction Committee concerning the House Building Finance Company Ltd. (HBFC), marking a positive advancement in the privatization process.

The Board also endorsed the organizational arrangement of the Privatization Commission, which includes conducting in-house due diligence on entities proposed for privatization to enhance the effectiveness of the transaction process. Additionally, the Commission will present meticulously researched policy proposals to the federal government, with the aim of fostering an enabling environment for the privatization of state-owned enterprises, in line with the functions outlined in the Privatization Commission Ordinance.

Recent rumors circulating on Weibo indicate that the upcoming Oppo Find N3 is poised to introduce wireless charging to the series, a feature that has never been seen before on the lineup.

Additionally, this new smartphone is expected to boast flagship-grade camera capabilities, top-of-the-line displays, and a high-performing battery.

However, it’s worth noting that the report lacks specific figures or evidence to support these claims. At present, we have confirmation that the Oppo Find N3 will sport a larger 8-inch inner display, boasting a resolution of 2268 x 2440 pixels and a refresh rate of 120Hz.

According to speculation, the cover display is rumored to measure 6.5 inches. Furthermore, the device is said to be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, offering the potential for up to 16 GB of RAM and a maximum storage capacity of 1 TB.

Rumors suggest that the upcoming Oppo Find N3 might feature a substantial 4,805 mAh battery, complemented by a rapid 80W wired charging capability. It is unclear how fast the wireless charging is going to be.

In terms of photography, there is going to be a remarkable 50MP IMX890 primary camera, accompanied by a 48MP IMX581 ultrawide lens, and a 32MP L07D1W22 periscope zoom lens. Furthermore, the device is expected to house a 32MP selfie camera on the cover screen, as well as another 32MP camera on the inner display.

If all goes according to plan, Oppo may potentially launch the Find N3 as early as August. It may be rebranded as OnePlus’s first foldable phone as well.

Taking yet another page out of rival apps’ books, WhatsApp is bringing video messages to the app soon, as spotted by WABetaInfo.

The feature was spotted in WhatsApp’s beta version 2.23.8.19 for Android and 23.6.0.73 for iOS, meaning it is coming to both platforms soon. As the name says, this feature will let you record a quick video for up to 60 seconds and send it as a message.

Just like Telegram, you can switch between audio and video messages by tapping the microphone icon at the bottom right of your screen in a chat. You can hold the button to record, or tap it to switch between audio and video. The same goes for WhatsApp on iOS as well.

Video messages will appear as a large circle in your chat and you will need to tap on them to enlarge them and listen to the audio. However, both sides will need to have their WhatsApp updated to the latest version to use this feature.

Since video messages are recorded in real-time, you can be assured that they are authentic and not pre-recorded videos or forwarded messages.

Material Design 3

WhatsApp is also redesigning several parts of the app in the same beta update. The new design is called Material Design 3 and it will start with an updated design for some buttons in the settings as well as the main menu.

The design resembles Google’s Material You UI that features on Android 12/13 phones as well as some of its productivity apps. Have a look at the image below.

WhatsApp’s video messages and Material Design 3 are still in development so it is unclear when these updates will launch widely. But since they are in beta already, it should not be long before everyone can get their hands on it.
