UN COP-27 announces to give Vice Presidency to PM Shehbaz

Pakistan has been entrusted with vice presidency of 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP-27) to be held next month in Egypt.

Pakistan has got this global distinction out of the 195 members of the United Nations.

The announcement has been made keeping in view Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s role as an effective voice on climate change. In the wake of recent floods, the Prime Minister forcefully raised the issue of climate change at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit and the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Presidency of the Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC-27 (COP-27) is with Egypt.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has also invited Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to jointly chair COP-27 meeting.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Norway and the Egyptian President will jointly chair the roundtable conference.

The COP-27 meeting beginning in Egypt from the 6th of next month, will be attended by world leaders, heads of governments, representatives of think-tanks and international financial institutions.

In a tweet, Prime Minister has said world is acknowledging the severity of climate challenge that threatens to stunt our civilization and development.

He said that we need to turn this realization into concrete action to combat climate change.

Shehbaz Sharif said he is humbled by the invitation to co-chair the Conference of the Parties (COP27) roundtable in Egypt next month.
