New York: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has urged India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and avoid a military confrontation that could spin out of control. In a press encounter in New York addressing the tension between the two nations, he emphasized the importance of resolving the situation through peaceful means.

According to Radio Pakistan, the UN Secretary General acknowledged the heightened tension following the terror attack in Pahalgam and stressed the need for those responsible to be brought to justice through credible and lawful channels. Guterres highlighted that the current tension between India and Pakistan is the highest it has been in years, urging both countries to step back from the brink of war.

Guterres reiterated that a military solution is not a solution and offered his good offices to facilitate peace between India and Pakistan. He stated that the United Nations is prepared to support any initiative that aims at de-escalation, diplomacy, and a renewed commitment to peace.

The UN Secretary General also recognized the significant contributions of both countries to the United Nations, expressing regret over the deteriorating relations between the two, which he described as reaching a boiling point.
