Karachi: Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s High-level Business Delegation headed by Junaid Esmail Makda, Vice President, met the High Commissioner of Pakistan in New Delhi H.E. Shahid Malik and briefed about the proposal given to Commerce Ministry of Pakistan to enhance the bilateral trade with India. According to KCCI’s press release, Junaid Makda informed High Commissioner that the Ministry of Commerce sought proposals from KCCI regarding the Trade Policy with specific input about trade with India and China. He said that a KCCI’s proposal for trade policy was submitted to Secretary Commerce Zafar Mahmood with a detailed annexure on trade with India.
He informed that he was heading the KCCI delegation to India to for advocacy to promote and strengthen bilateral trade ties and sign the agreement of cooperation with Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry to establish Bombay-Karachi Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry as desired by the two Governments through respective commerce ministries.
Junaid Makda said that KCCI every year compiles productive proposals regarding forthcoming federal budget and trade policy. He recently had a series of meeting with Zafar Mahmood, Secretary Commerce, Government of Pakistan at the Ministry and KCCI and gave the KCCI’s meaningful proposals for Trade Policy, highlighting the significant potentiality of trade with India and other countries of the region. He said that various suggestions were given in terms of removing the tariff and non-tariff barriers. He said that various items were also highlighted for including in the trade policy for allowing in the trade with India which would be benefiting for the domestic industries of Pakistan engaged in the export-oriented and other sectors. KCCI has also proposed to increase trade through land-route and besides Wagah-Attari, to open the Monabao-Khokrapar and improve Customs facilitations and infrastructure. He highlighted that visa was the core issue and requested the High Commissioner to take up the matter with the concerned high-ups in both countries.
Makda voiced that Pakistan was in dire need of market access to regional countries vis-à-vis India, Afghanistan, Central Asian Republics, Iran etc. as the War against Terror had brought severe hardships to Pakistan’s economy and the international powers had not reciprocated in terms of market access. He said that KCCI never believed in AID but has always voiced for TRADE to promote national economy. He admired and appreciated the efforts of Mr. Naeem Anwar, Minister (Trade), High Commission of Pakistan in New Delhi for convincing KCCI to bring the delegation to India. He said that Mr. Naeem Anwar was very cooperation and responsive to the KCCI and the business community.
His Excellency, Shahid Malik, High Commissioner of Pakistan in New Delhi, earlier, warmly welcomed Junaid Esmail Makda, Vice President-KCCI and the delegation. He highly admired the thoughtfulness of the Leadership and Office Bearers of KCCI to bring high-level delegation in a very short period of time to sign the Agreement of Cooperation with the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He recalled that he visited KCCI last year and had very productive session with the President and members. He commended the efforts of Karachi Chamber for playing its imperative role to uplift the economy.
The KCCI is a proactive and leading Chamber and its role in the trade and industry is unsurpassed, he recognized. He also appreciated Junaid Makda and the delegation for interacting with Indian Secretary Textiles and Joint Secretary Commerce to provide meaningful input to increase two-way trade. He assured High Commission’s best support to the KCCI and the business community to fortify the trade links.
The KCCI Delegation Members Yasin Saya, Asif Bega, Sohail Ahmed and Khadim Rasool also participated and exchanged of views with High Commissioner, Naeem Anwar, Minister (Trade), Shafique-Ur-Rehman, Counsellor, Manzoor Ali Memon, Press Attaché and other officials at Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi.
