New York:Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasized the need for restraint, de-escalation, and sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.

According to Radio Pakistan, he expressed these views during a conversation with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Prime Minister voiced his deep concern over the prolonged conflict and highlighted the importance of implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

The meeting between the two leaders reaffirmed the close ties between Pakistan and Iran, emphasizing the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation across various areas of mutual interest. President Pezeshkian acknowledged Pakistan's role in regional peace efforts and expressed Tehran's desire for deeper cooperation, rooted in shared history, culture, and faith.

Both sides agreed on the importance of regular consultations and coordination to address challenges and seize opportunities, aiming for regional peace, security, and prosperity. Key officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, were present at the meeting.

In a follow-up on social media, Prime Minister Sharif reiterated Pakistan's commitment to regional peace and the longstanding bonds with Iran, stressing the importance of restraint and sustained diplomacy to address regional conflicts.
