Islamabad: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed officials to speed up the implementation of tax reform measures, emphasizing the importance of these reforms during a meeting in Islamabad. The meeting, which took place on Tuesday, focused on discussions related to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the ongoing tax reforms.
According to Radio Pakistan, the government plans to introduce a National Targeting System aimed at preventing sales tax evasion and curbing smuggling. This system will involve the direct tracking of freight vehicles using e-tags and digital devices. The meeting highlighted that a digital monitoring system would be installed on major highways and entry points across the country to control smuggling and sales tax evasion. This initiative aims to digitize the economy and significantly boost national revenues.
Additionally, the meeting covered the necessity of effective training for the FBR workforce to operate these new systems efficiently. It was also mentioned that FBR officials and supporting institutions are now monitoring production activities in the tobacco, beverages, steel, and cement sectors.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif stressed the need for swift and effective implementation of the tax reform measures. He assured that while taxpaying individuals and businesses would receive maximum facilitation, there would be no leniency for tax evaders, who would face strict legal action. The Prime Minister also commended the FBR and its associated law enforcement agencies for their efforts to enhance tax revenue collection.
