Islamabad: This was expressed by the Federal Minister for Science and Technology Mir Chengez Khan Jamali’ who was the Chief guest on the occasion at the concluding session of ”the National Conference on Trends in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology” held at Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad.
The Federal Minister said that no body can deny the significance of science in this age of technology? Now it has become more evident than ever that science is linked to technology through its applications and technology is linked to economy which obviously promotes prosperity to the society.
“So in order to make our economy grow we need a new wave of educated people ready for modern scientific research, teaching and technological development. Because a dynamic, world class research is not only vital for nation’s academic health but is crucial for its economic, technical and social well-being”
The Minister highlighted the role of the universities and said “As we all know the main functions of universities are teaching and research. In their teaching activities, universities provide the professional training for high level jobs, as well as education necessary for the development of personality. While university research increases the body of theoretical knowledge as well as its application to practical problems”
The Minister said that the present government is committed to have an action-oriented policies and plans in the spheres of Science and technology and Research and Development. Pakistan National Science and Technology priorities are focused on strengthening the existing Institutions involved in Research and development of activities both in the public and private sectors.
He said that the development of indigenous technologies, capacity building and commercialization of Research and Development products has been given priority so that Research and Development in the public sector may be able to self-sustain, lessening its dependency on the government funding.
The Federal Minister said that to strengthen our innovation system, to enable them to meet the challenges of globalization the Pakistan National Science Technology and Innovation policy-2012 has envisaged a paradigm shift, in which is recognized as an integral part of Science and Technology system. Also the need to engage public sector in achieving overall policy objectives has been given due attention in the policy.
The Minister said “producing a highly qualified and skilled work force can meet the demands of global competition. There is a new role for scientist to play in tapping the economic opportunities with their Research and Development activities. We have the firm belief that economic progress, social harmony and national security critically depend on our ability to master and judiciously apply modern Science and Technology.
He appreciated the role of Quaid –e- Azam university for organizing such a research based conference, He also distributed prizes among the winners whose research thesis were marked out standing.
Earlier the vice chancellor of the university, Mr. Masoom Yasinzai briefed the chief guest upon the progress and development of the institution and claimed that Quaid –e-Azam university is the top leading university among the public universities of the country.
