Minister for Power Khurram Dastgir Khan says the government is working tirelessly to reduce load shedding in the country.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad on Friday, he expressed the hope that the situation of electricity supply in the country will improve, as 720 MW Karot hydropower project begins operation today and the K-2 nuclear power plant will start working after Eid ul Adha.

The Minister said there is 30 percent increase in demand of electricity this summer and as of Thursday the demand was a record 30,009 MW against the estimated demand of 24,000 to 25,000 MW.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said the federal and provincial governments will undertake joint efforts for the relief and rehabilitation of flood affected people.

He was talking to the media persons during his visit to a tent village in Khusnoob area of Qilla Saifullah on Monday.

Shehbaz Sharif said payment of compensation has immediately been started to the flood affected people.

He said the federal government is disbursing one million rupees to the heirs of those who lost their loved ones in the calamity. Balochistan government will also extend the same compensation to the bereaved families. He said financial assistance will also be provided to the injured.

Shehbaz Sharif said a joint survey will also be conducted to assess the damages caused by the floods to crops, livestock and the infrastructure. He assured that compensation will also be given to the people who lost their crops and livestock whilst infrastructure damaged by the floods will also be repaired.

The Prime Minister took serious notice of non-provision of ration in the tent village. He directed the authorities concerned to ensure provision of ration and water to the flood affected people.

Chief Minister Balochistan Abdul Quddus Bizenjo said directions had been issued to the authorities for provision of ration and water to the people in tent village. Suspending the Deputy Commissioner, Tehsildar and the concerned officials of PDMA over their negligence, he said an inquiry will also be conducted into the matter. He assured that the ration will be provided to the affected people on daily basis.

Earlier, the Prime Minister was given a detailed briefing on the rescue and relief efforts in the flood affected areas.

On arrival in Quetta, Chief Secretary Balochistan Abdul Aziz Uqaili and Chairman NDMA Lieutenant General Akhtar Nawaz gave a detailed briefing to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on the damages caused by floods in Balochistan and the rescue and relief efforts.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said it is our national tragedy that no attention was paid in the past for the construction of dams. He said we will not rest in peace until the complete rehabilitation of the flood affected people.

Commending the efforts of PDMA, NDMA, provincial administration and the NHA, he directed to spread the network of medical camps in the flood ravaged areas.

The Prime Minister also appealed the local and international organizations to assist the government in providing relief to the affected population.

During the briefing, it was informed that the floods have so far claimed lives of 136 people and injured seventy others in Balochistan province. It was informed that twenty thousand and five hundred people have been shifted to safer places. Motorway M-8 and Quetta-Karachi highway have been restored to a great extent.

The National Assembly was informed on Monday that electricity service cables from pole to meter in most of the urban areas are in good working conditions to limit the theft and losses within permissible limits.

Responding to a question during the Question Hour, Parliamentary Secretary for Energy Rana Iradat Sharif Khan said independent cables are installed to each individual connection. He said in some cases problems are there in remote and rural areas where service to service connections are installed. He said aerial bundled cables are now being installed in theft prone areas to counter direct hooking as well as for ensuring safety.

He said in narrow streets where cables cannot be secured properly, four-core cables are being installed after removal of individual cables.

The Parliamentary Secretary the power distribution companies are focusing to properly secure and improve the distribution system cables.

Answering a question, he said the cost of free supply of electricity to employees is borne by concerned power distribution companies.

Replying to a question, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rubbani Khar said that 2390 Pakistanis prisoners were released or deported from Saudi jails in last three years while another 426 were released from the United States in the same period.

Minister for Finance and Revenue Miftah Ismail has reiterated the government's resolve to take every required step to facilitate and support the business community.

He was talking to a delegation of Markazi Tanzeem-e-Tajaran Pakistan that called on him in Islamabad on Monday.

The delegation apprised the Finance Minister of the issues being faced by the business community especially related to taxation on electricity bill and requested him to resolve their issues.

Acknowledging the contribution of business community in the economic development of the country, the Finance Minister addressed their apprehensions regarding taxation and assured them that their issues will be resolved.

The death toll in flood affected districts of Balochistan has risen to 136 while 70 persons have been injured.

According to a report released by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, a total of 13,535 houses were collapsed or partially damaged due to the ongoing heavy rains and floods.

Six highways covering 640 kilometers have also been severely affected in the rains and flood.

Meanwhile, large-scale relief and rehabilitation operations are underway in all affected areas of the province.

Minister for Finance and Revenue Miftah Ismail has appreciated the Federal Board of Revenue for collecting a record amount of tax worth 763 billion rupees last month.

Addressing a news conference in Islamabad today, he said it shows an increase of 32 percent in tax collection.

The Finance Minister said tax collection has never exceeded 580 billion rupees per month in the country.

He said 389 billion rupees in lieu of income tax was collected last month, recording an increase of 45 percent.

Miftah Ismail said no advance tax was taken last month to achieve tax collection target.

He said during the 4th quarter of outgoing financial year since PML-N led allied government took over, the tax collection remained 1741 billion rupees, which is 29 percent more than last year’s same period.

The Minister said refunds worth 39 billion rupees have been issued during the last month, recording an increase of 44 percent as compared to last year.
