NICTA face recognition technology that improves the speed and accuracy of identifying faces in CCTV footage has won the ICT R&D prize at the Asia-Pacific ICT Alliance Awards (APICTA) in Thailand.

NICTA’s Face Search Engine vastly improves face recognition in grainy, low quality video footage, potentially saving time in police investigations where CCTV footage is usually reviewed manually. NICTA’s Face Search Engine also triggers automatic watchlist notifications in real-time.

“ICT R&D is absolutely fundamental to solving economic and social challenges in Australia and is central to the transformation of industry sectors,” said NICTA’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr Phil Robertson.

The APICTA Awards is an international awards program which aims to increase ICT awareness in the community and assist in bridging the digital divide.  APICTA’s global participants include Brunei, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Macau, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. Australia’s participation in APICTA is facilitated by the Australia Information Industry Association (AIIA).

“Great ideas are never enough. What we are seeing is real innovation backed by strong implementation being taken directly into commercial markets. That is how Australia will capitalise on the opportunities on offer in the new global economy and it is truly exciting to see these companies in action,” said AIIA CEO Suzanne Campbell.
