Algerian Constitutional Council says presidential polls ‘impossible’ on July 4

Algiers Algeria's Constitutional Council announced Sunday that it will not be possible to hold presidential elections on 4 July 2019, noting that it is up to the head of state to recall the electoral body.

The council said in a statement that conditions must be created to hold transparent and fair presidential elections, in order to preserve the constitutional institutions that would enable the realization of the people's aspirations. It added that it is up to the head of state to recall the Election Commission again and complement the electoral process until the election of the President of the Republic and taking his oath of office.

The Constitutional Council, which cited a lack of valid candidates for the July elections, did not set a new date for the presidential polls, asking interim President Abdelkader Bensalah to organize a vote at a later date.
