UN Chief Commends Pakistan’s Role in Diplomacy and Mediation

Islamabad:United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has acknowledged Pakistan's significant contributions to promoting dialogue, mediation, and de-escalation on the global stage. Speaking at a joint press event in Islamabad with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Guterres praised Pakistan for its longstanding support to the UN and its role as a reliable mediator, particularly between the United States and Iran.

According to Radio Pakistan, Guterres highlighted Pakistan's credibility in facilitating negotiations and reducing tensions in one of the world's most perilous conflicts. He commended Pakistan's leadership for its efforts that led to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a ceasefire, and a framework for future negotiations between the US and Iran.

Guterres emphasized Pakistan's role as a source of solidarity and solutions, noting that the country brings an essential perspective to global debates. He urged the international community to end conflicts, return to diplomacy, and uphold international law regarding navigational rights and freedoms, while expressing commitment to work with Pakistan on various global issues.

The UN Secretary-General also addressed other pressing international concerns, calling for an end to Palestinian suffering and the implementation of the peace plan. He warned against developments in the West Bank that could undermine the two-state solution and advocated for UN Security Council reforms to enhance representation and legitimacy.

Ishaq Dar, the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, echoed Guterres' sentiments, underscoring Pakistan’s pivotal role in facilitating dialogue between the US and Iran after 47 years. He also reiterated Pakistan's commitment to diplomatic efforts for peace in Gaza and its participation in discussions with US President Donald Trump alongside other Arab and Muslim countries.

Dar further emphasized the importance of resolving disputes in Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions, urging international action to implement these resolutions.

During his visit, Guterres also participated in a ceremonial tree planting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad.
