Islamabad: Illegal immigration from Pakistan to Europe has seen a significant reduction, with figures dropping by 64%, according to recent discussions held in Islamabad. The International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) and the European Union's Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex) have praised Pakistan for its effective measures in curbing this issue.

According to Radio Pakistan, the commendations were made during separate meetings between Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Director General of ICMPD Susanne Raab, and Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijtens. The meetings focused on enhancing mutual cooperation to prevent illegal immigration, with both sides expressing a commitment to strengthen joint efforts on border management.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the challenging nature of achieving such a reduction in illegal immigration, given the limited resources available. He emphasized that Pakistan had accepted the prevention of illegal immigration as a challenge, and the dedicated efforts of his team played a crucial role in achieving this milestone.

Naqvi further stated that the next target is to curtail illegal immigration by 100%, a goal that Pakistan is determined to achieve at all costs. He mentioned that opening new avenues for legal migration, alongside adopting modern technology and training officers, is essential for preventing illegal immigration.

Efforts are currently underway to enhance the institutional capacity of relevant agencies to align with modern requirements for more effective border management. Naqvi outlined plans to install cameras equipped with modern technology at 500 immigration counters across all airports in Pakistan as a key task ahead.

The Interior Minister underscored the importance of cooperation with ICMPD and Frontex, stating that such collaboration is crucial. Director General Susanne Raab applauded Pakistan's efforts against illegal immigration and assured that ICMPD will extend all possible cooperation to help Pakistan achieve the goal of completely eliminating illegal immigration.
