874,000 people in urgent need of food in quake-hit region of Turkiye, Syria: UN

Rescue and Relief operations are underway in earthquake affected areas of Turkiye and Syria, as chances of people's survival fall greatly due to injuries, dehydration and cold.

More than 22,700 people have been confirmed dead so far in the devastating earthquake.

Meanwhile, the winter freeze has left thousands of people either spending nights in their cars or huddling around makeshift fires across the quake-hit region.

The United Nations has warned that 874,000 people are now in urgent need of food across Turkiye and Syria.

The World Food Programme has appealed for 77 million dollars to provide food rations and hot meals to the people in the quake-affected areas.

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged the Security Council to authorise the opening of new cross-border humanitarian aid points between Turkey and Syria.

Meanwhile, Turkiye said it is working on opening two new routes into rebel-held parts of Syria.
