Challenging the recent surge in electricity bills, a legal maneuver unfolded in the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday.

In response, the court issued a directive to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to provide a platform for the petitioner’s voice to be heard and to render a decision within a concise span of 15 days.

Justice Muhammad Raza Qureshi, overseeing the proceedings, emphasized the urgency of the matter, underscoring the ongoing petitions awaiting resolution before NEPRA that require prompt adjudication.

These legal deliberations transpired in response to a plea lodged by Abdul Mateen.

In a separate development, Karachi has found itself grappling with extensive power outages ranging from 10 to 11 hours.

These disruptions have profoundly impacted the lives of residents in various neighborhoods, including Steel Town, Ram Swami, Model Colony, Malir, Sarjani Town, Khuda Ki Basti, Nusrat Bhutto Colony, and Buzta Line.

Locals have raised concerns, noting that the electricity supply is intentionally halted from morning until evening, ostensibly for maintenance purposes.

On a contrasting note, the spokesperson from K-Electric offered a different viewpoint. He asserted that there were no covert instances of load shedding occurring across Karachi.

The spokesperson clarified that issues such as cable and technical malfunctions should not be conflated with deliberate load shedding. He explained that areas struggling with electricity theft undergo controlled load management to address the problem.

PIA CBA’s Homes Get Raided During Protests Against Privatization and Pay Hikes

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has witnessed intensified turmoil as police authorities conducted raids at the homes of PIA CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) leaders.

The raids followed the ongoing protests staged by the PIA CBA People’s Unity against the impending privatization of the national airline and their demand for increased salaries. The raids, executed in the PIA Township, were carried out in the presence of airline security officers.

The PIA administration responded to the protests by filing cases against the participating employees. Law enforcement and airport security officials conducted thorough searches during the raids.

Reports suggest that the CBA leaders’ families faced harassment during these operations, as stated by one of the CBA leaders to the media. However, there is no official confirmation yet regarding the arrests of any CBA People’s Unity or Officers Association’s office-bearers.

This development unfolded shortly after the PIA administration decided to take legal action against protesting employees. Sources indicate that the administration invoked the Pakistan Essential Services (Maintenance) Act 1952 which bans gatherings, protests, and sit-ins by employees of essential services. As tensions escalate, the PIA Action Committee of Employees has declared the closure of booking offices nationwide as part of their ongoing protests.

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has requested yet another bailout package worth Rs. 23 billion from the government in order to stay afloat.

The PIA management met with interim Finance Minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar last week seeking urgent liquidity. The caretaker government hasn’t accorded its approval yet but asked the national flag carrier to submit an achievable debt repayment plan, according to Express Tribune.

During the meeting, the PIA management informed the caretaker finance minister of a Rs. 23 billion funding shortage faced by the airline. Instead of accepting the carrier’s bid for a full and direct bailout, Shamshad instructed PIA to secure Rs. 13 billion in sovereign guarantees and the remaining Rs. 10 billion, both from banks.

PIA asked the finance minister for assistance in obtaining such bank loans since its decrepit financial statements didn’t allow it to acquire such liquidity on its own.

Shamshad directed PIA to present an achievable restructuring and privatization plan to the federal cabinet. The finance minister further asked the airline to pitch a realistic business proposal that should include management’s own efforts rather than relying just on handouts from the federal government.

PIA’s persistent financial problems are cause for concern, but its inability to meet debt repayment obligations over the last decade is widely seen as the bigger issue. At least three PIA restructuring exercises have been carried out since 2017 but without a credible framework for guaranteed repayment.

Pertinently, the flag carrier got Rs. 15 billion from the previous government in the previous fiscal year. Also, the finance ministry endorsed Rs. 4 billion in bridge funding payable to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) last month, which will be handed out in 4QFY24.
