Minister for National Food Security and Research Tariq Bashir Cheema says government is making all-out efforts to uplift the agriculture sector and bring our farmers at par with their international counterparts.

Chairing a meeting of the committee formed by the Prime Minister for Agriculture Yield Improvement in Islamabad on Thursday, he said this forum provides an opportunity to take a comprehensive stock of the agriculture sector and find ways to improve its yield and productivity.

While briefing the committee, Food Security Commissioner Waseem Ul Hassan said that progressive farmers in Pakistan have a higher yield per acre compared to the country’s average.

Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan Sima Kamil told the committee that 45 percent of the financing annual target has been achieved of the PM’s Kissan Package. She added that 444 billion rupees have been disbursed for farming purpose while 401 billion has been disbursed for livestock, benefiting 3.2 million farming households. She said commercial banks will soon start to disburse 56 billion rupees for farm mechanization.

The Prime Minister had constituted the committee to suggest measures for agricultural yield improvement and to review steps for availability of quality seeds, inputs and farm machinery.

Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal says a Special Project Cell will be established at the Ministry of Planning to take full advantage of international aid for flood victims.

Chairing a review meeting on the implementation of decisions made in Geneva Conference in Islamabad today, he said aid for Pakistan has reached 10.9 billion dollars.

He said Pakistan’s reconstruction strategy was appreciated globally. He said Special Project unit will consist of the best professionals and experts.

Reiterating government’s resolve to ensure transparency in international aid projects, the Minister said third party audit will be ensured. He said projects will immediately be started with the collaboration of provincial governments.

Later, addressing a ceremony in Islamabad, the Planning Minister called for enhancing production capacity for a sustainable solution of country’s economic challenges.

He said billions of dollars can be brought in the country by bringing our productivity at par with global average.

Ahsan Iqbal said agriculture sector of the country has the potential of giving breakthrough by improving farm management practices.

The Minister said yield of wheat can be enhanced by 80 to 300 percent through modern cultivation methods.

Ahsan Iqbal stressed on increasing tax to GDP and creating conducive environment for investors.

The President said technology and artificial intelligence has benefited mankind in many ways, especially in the education, agriculture and health sectors. He said our country needs to accelerate its pace in this realm.

Dr Arif Alvi said this expo provided an excellent platform to explore technology sector and enhance our access to global markets.

Earlier, the President presented excellence awards to entrepreneurs who gave commendable performance in the technology sector.
