The newly constituted Pakistan Medical Council has postponed the Medical and Dental Colleges Admissions Test, popularly known as MDCAT, in view of flood situation in the country.

This was announced by Minister for National Health Services and Regulations Abdul Qadir Patel at a news conference in Islamabad on Wednesday afternoon.

He said electricity and internet services remained disconnected in various parts of the country, especially in Sindh and Balochistan due to devastating floods. He said now the students, who could not apply for the test, can register themselves through the requisite portal and provinces will conduct the MDCAT test under their domain. He said Portal will remain open for two weeks for such students.

The Minister said this policy can also be reviewed if a seat remains unfilled. He said around 16,000 Pakistani students are studying abroad, draining out 50 billion rupees. He said we are committed to facilitate our children.

He said the council has also decided to review The National Licensing Examination for Pakistani graduates; however, this exam will continue for foreigners.

Germany has pledged support of thirteen million Euros to Pakistan’s relief and rehabilitation efforts in flood hit areas.

The offer was made during a telephonic conversation between Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman and German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze on Wednesday.

Sherry Rehman briefed the German Minister on the devastations wreaked by the floods throughout the country and the assistance required to carry out first response relief in the flood-hit areas effectively.

Apprising the minister of the damages incurred by the flood, Sherry Rehman highlighted one-third of the country is under water.

She said amount of rain Pakistan received this year is unprecedented, resulting in a ‘Monster monsoon’. More than 33 million people are affected. Providing relief and rescue has become a mammoth challenge itself, since there is no dry land in sight in the southern province of Sindh.

Sherry Rehman also discussed the ‘Germany Pakistan Climate Energy Initiative’ which focused on working towards enhancing Pakistan and German collaboration on the fight against climate change and energy issues.

The main objective of the funds is to provide the most vulnerable sections of the population with assistance through an existing social security system. In addition, emergency equipment and logistical support can be provided by redirecting funds from ongoing projects.

German Minister Svenja Shulze expressed solidarity with the people of Pakistan and assured the full support of the German government to for Pakistan in these trying times. She expressed her country’s sincerest condolences and deepest regret on the loss of precious lives.
